People so often argue that taking your husband's last name is anti-feminist. I'm lucky enough to not have friends and acquaintances that question me in the fact that I plan on taking Andre's last name. Some argue that taking your husband's last name is letting him claim or own you. I don't see it that way.

Growing up, a girl's father is the greatest man in her life. He guides her, protects her, loves her, and she loves him in return. A girl's father is not only her family, but also a shoulder to cry on and someone important to help instill certain values within her.

When a woman chooses a man to marry, generally it's because that man carries the same qualities that her dad carries. This means that he can be the same thing for their children some day and also can be all those things for her later in life. Taking a husband's last name is like passing that torch from her father to her husband. Not letting him claim or own her, but connecting the two as a family, an entity different from her parents and siblings. It's saying "I love you, now and forever, and by sharing a last name, we are sharing a connection, trust, and togetherness between ourselves and the entire world." Sharing a last name is a bond that shouldn't be broken.

To me, this is so important. It will let my husband know how serious I take our relationship and that I am his sidekick forever. I don't think taking a husband's last name is anti-feminist. I think it shows commitment. I think it broadcasts love.

I say, to each his own, but I personally, will be taking my husband's last name.

xx,

  3. I completely agree with you! I always tell people, if someone isn't willing to take their husband's last name, then are they really committed to them??
