I believe the greatest thing in life is love, and I'm positive that my view on love comes from my parents. They've been together almost 40 years, and are still going strong. Today, I wanted to share their love story with you all, because it's like a real-life fairy tale.

When my parents met, my mom was 12 and my dad was 17. For my mom, it was love at first sight. She went home and told her sister (my Aunt Val), "I'm going to marry that boy one day" and she did. Obviously, they did not start dating then. (I mean, what kind of creep would my dad have been dating a 12-year old when he was 17?) But they became friends, because their families were very close (they both have several brothers and sisters who were friends).
So, for several years, my mom was madly in love with my dad, but he wouldn't date her because she was just too young. Unfortunately, when my mom was 17, her brother (my Uncle Steve, and one of my dad's closest friends) was killed in a drunk-driving accident. Soon after, my dad asked my mom to marry him. She said no (this time, and several times after), because she thought he was just asking out of pity. She finally said yes, and they got married when my mom was 17. They've been together ever since.

I love my parents' love story. I love how much they absolutely love each other, to this day. Because of their love for each other and us kids, love is something that has truly shaped my life. It's because of my parents that I believe that all you need is love, and I hope mine and Andre's marriage is even half as full of love and support as my mom's and dad's is.

  1. Your parents have a beautiful story! It always warms my heart to hear stories like that, and it's a great reminder that true love still exists in today's crazy world. My parents have been together almost 29 years, and I'm so grateful for their example.

    Have a great day!

    1. Yes. Growing up, I was one of the only people I knew that's parents were still together. It's heartwarming and fills me with joy to know how much my parents love each other and to see other older couples in love.

  5. Awww! Thanks for sharing, that is such a cool love story! I definitely have a soft spot for couples with a bit of an age gap...probably because I was 17 and my husband was 24 when we first met. Your parents' story reminds me a bit of my great-grandparents: My great-grandpa was 21 when he moved to a new city and into a boarding house, where he looked out the window and noticed the 14 year old daughter of the next-door neighbors working in the garden. That was it for him, but he had to wait a long time till she turned 18 and he could start going out with my great-grandma.

  6. Aww this is so sweet! There is something about love stories where the couple never really officially dates until they're so in love they're ready to get married!
