Summer can be busy - full of adventures, and road trips, and travel. Being on the move a lot, it's super important that you stay on top of your well-being. Here are seven tips for making the best of your summer without compromising your health.

Keep snacks handy.
I always keep a snack on hand for when I have low blood sugars. A protein bar is a healthier option, but helps quickly raise a low blood sugar and gives me extra energy when I'm feeling weak.

Eat well.

It's much easier to eat well in the summer than during the colder months. Fresh fruits and veggies are low in carbs and calories, while also being crazy refreshing. Take note of your options and choose what works best for your lifestyle. For a helpful shopping list, make sure to scroll to the bottom of this post.

Drink lots and lots of water.
It's a tale as old as time, right? Always have bottled water around, because you never know when you may need it. Summer sunshine can soak up hydration quick, so making sure to stay hydrated throughout those long summer days is absolutely imperative. I'm sure I don't need to walk you through what it's like to become dehydrated - but I will say this: it is not fun.

Tote a backpack as a purse.
I've been on the backpack trend for years and I never get tired of it. It's such an easy way to carry everything you need, but still keep your hands free. You don't even have to think about toting it. It's just there. I usually go for a smaller option (not a full-sized backpack), but you can do whatever best suits your needs.

Stay active.
It's so easy to be active in the summer, because there's so much to do. The sun is shining, there are tons of festivals and activities to be done. So make sure you're living it up! Some ideas are going for a walk on your local biking/walking trail, swimming, going on a nature walk, picking up a game of beach volleyball, or even summertime shopping. Just get moving. You won't regret it (but your muscles may)!

Make sure to pack necessities.
For me, necessities are things like my phone, keys, and wallet, of course, but also other things like my glucose meter, my insulin, and other medications I may need throughout the day.

Take a daily vitamin pack.
Your chosen vitamins may differ from mine, but for me, I choose the Nature MadeⓇ Daily Diabetes Health Pack, which provides me with daily nutritional support as a Diabetic. † The Nature MadeⓇ Daily Diabetes Health Pack is a multivitamin and mineral supplement that provides essential vitamins and minerals for daily nutritional support; including fish oil with vitamin D3 to support a healthy heart; vitamin D to support bone, teeth, muscle, and immune health; magnesium to support healthy bones, and teeth, plus helps convert food to cellular energy; vitamin C to help support the immune system; alpha lipoic acid with green tea, which has antioxidant properties; and chromium, which is necessary for carbohydrate metabolism and utilization, and supports healthy glucose metabolism.
The Nature MadeⓇ Daily Diabetes Health Pack is also super easy to find and inexpensive when you purchase at your local Sam's Club or Sam's Club online. And no membership? No problem. You can still shop with a 10% fee added. (Also, I ordered this on Friday, and it was at my door the next morning. I was so impressed.)

  1. Good call on drinking more water! I usually do pretty well at work because I have my water bottle ready to go but on the weekends I slack off so I think I need to get another water bottle to use at home too. Hooray for backpacks! I've been loving mine and it just doesn't feel as convenient whenever I use a purse now.

    1. Oh, yes! I agree. I do really great at work, but at home is definitely when I slack off on the water front. And backpacks have always been a favorite - they're just so easy and convenient!
