I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading Fitness Junkie. While I have big aspirations to be fit and healthy, that's not necessarily the category that I fall into on any given day. I was worried when I started reading this book that it was going to be one of those stories that fat-shames and that it would make me feel bad about myself.

It's not that kind of book.

Brief synopsis: When Janey's business partner and best friend, Beau, tells her to lose 30 pounds or lose her job, she dives head first into the insane world of health and fitness - from juicing to home delivered meals to eating clay, to fitness classes taught by militants to topless yoga to shaman journeys. But is she doing it for herself, or for all the wrong reasons?

Fitness Junkie is a hilarious satirical look into how far people are willing to go to be thin. While I hate thin-shaming just as much as I hate fat-shaming, I wouldn't say this novel is a book of shame. While yes, the main plot is that a woman is being forced to lose weight or her job, this isn't a book about shaming weight. It does, however, speak to unhealthy ways of finding thinness - which is indeed something different. We all come in different shapes and sizes - some of us are extremely thin and other much heavier. It's important, however, that we are our own healthy selves, regardless of our size or shape that can seen outwardly.

Throughout the book, I found myself actually laughing out loud at the absurdity of the different fitness trends. The novel also made effective use of popular media channels, like mindbodygreen, the Skimm, and more. While it's likely the "tweets" and articles in the novel where made up for the sake of the story, I would believe they could have also been real snippets added to the book to really drive-home the silliness we all tend to believe when browsing through the interwebs.

Fitness Junkie is the perfect satirical comedy to end your summer reading. It's so fun and such a quick read. I highly recommend getting your hands on it if you're looking for a good laugh!

I received this book free from Booksparks in exchange for an honest review. As always, all opinions are 100% my own.
