POPSUGAR Reading Challenge Prompt: A book by an author of a different ethnicity than you.

Brief synopsis: Camila Flores is a fat Wiccan girl who is completely unashamed by who she is. When her best friend and two mean girls from her high school end up unexpectedly dead, with claims from police of a suicide pact, Mila accidentally brings all three back to life using dark magic in an attempt to figure out how they really died. Did all three girls take their own lives, or is something more sinister happening in Fairmont?

Undead Girl Gang was absolutely everything I hoped for when I started reading it. Not only is the title killer, but the cover is so cool, and I absolutely love female protagonists like Mila.

Let me get this out of the way though: I figured it all out just chapters in. Which dropped my rating from a full five stars to only four. It's literally my only complaint about the book.

I love, love, love all the strong femme themes. I loved the characters and how even the mean girls have redeeming qualities. I love that even the male characters share vulnerability. I love being unabashedly fat. I love that the story includes such realistic things like shopping at Walmart, drinking Gatorade, and eating Chipotle and McDonald's. I know - the book's not real, because hello, undead, but it's so easy to connect to.

I honestly can't even write a thorough review - I just loved the book so much and want to be friends with Mila (and Lily Anderson, of course).

Read this book.

I received this book free for review, however, all opinions, as always are 100% my own.

  1. This book's premise sounds fascinating. Not something I'd normally read but from your fab review and just knowing it's got strong femme themes, it's being added to the list.
