Get Up and Move: My Goals for a Healthier Lifestyle

Through the iceland that was Georgia this week (see: upcoming Atlantartica post), I was still able to make it to my doctors appointment this past Thursday. While there, I learned something eye opening: my weight. I am currently at 210 pounds, the heaviest I've ever been in my 24 years. What I realized was not that I'm getting "fat," but rather that I am wildly unhealthy.

As I've mentioned before, I have diabetes. Type one. The type where I have to take multiple shots each day. Just that right there tells you I already am not in the best of health.

The issue, I realized, is not my constant cravings or the habits that have developed from those cravings, but my complete and utter laziness. Yes, I work in retail so I'm on my feet a lot, however, that's about as far as my workout routine goes.

So, I'm going to start getting out and moving more. Of course I'm not training for a marathon. I'm not Rocky running up flights and flights of stairs. But I will change. Not to lose weight or get skinny or be hot (those are just extra perks), but because I need to take care of myself. I've seen the damage living unhealthy can do. My mamaw died at 63 because of uncontrolled diabetes. I have to do this for my boyfriend, my family, and myself.

I've decided that the biggest changes I'll make in my diet are these:
(1) Stop eating sweets every single day. (Because, yes, that is how I'm currently living)
(2) Eat at home and take my lunch to work more often. (Good for saving money as well)
(3) And of course (always), drink more water.

These goals are attainable for me and I may set more goals in the long run.

Secondly, I will get up and move more often.

Thursday when I got home from the doctor, I set out a layered "work out" outfit and laid it beside the bed. I set my alarm for 9:30. I downloaded the Runkeeper app.

When I woke up Friday, I got dressed and went outside with my app set and ready to go and walked around the entire neighborhood for 30 minutes. It was 1.8 miles (not a lot, but a MAJOR step for me). I was breathing like Darth Vader and I was ready to crash by the time I got home but I took a shower and everything about me felt glorious. I was, I am, so proud of myself.

I even walked/jogged 1.2 miles today even though I spent the night with my sister last night. I wasn't at home, but I still got out there and moved. My whole body aches (from walking, who knew?) but I am still so glad. I just have to continue for 19 more days to make it a habit. I want to keep it up, so cheer me on!

What's something that you're trying to accomplish? I know it's cliche but taking that first step, it really is the hardest part. But after that, it makes all the difference.

  1. I have the same goal to accomplish! I'm hoping to be able to run a 5K (by the end of the school year) with the running club I'm coaching at school!
