Popsugar 2019 Reading Challenge Prompt: A novel based on a true story

After reading the synopsis, I had high hopes for The Woman Who Fed the Dogs. But the book truly wasn't what I expected. While the storyline of the novel is pretty solid, the book itself was confusing and messy. It almost read like it stream-of-consciousness, but wasn't written in such way.


The novel itself is based from the perspective of real-life child molester and murderer, Marc Dutroux, who was convicted in Belguim in the late 1980s. Michelle Martin was his wife during the crimes and was also sentenced to prison. She was released in 2012. This story is a fictional novel based from the perspective of Michelle (Odette, in the novel) during the time prior to her release.


I struggled so much trying to get through this book. Even though it's just over 200 pages, it took me almost an entire week to get through it. I wasn't craving to read it throughout the day and open up its pages when I got home each day after work.






The story was dark and thrilling, which I love. It was mysterious like a Liane Moriarty book - the reader doesn't know the entire story, but you find out more at the ending. But the writing was so confusing. I often had to go back during dialogue to see who said what, because I wasn't totally sure what was happening. Time periods would jump back and forth, so I didn't know when she was referring to.

There was vulgarity throughout the book that seemed odd and unnecessary. I wouldn't consider myself prude or easily offended, but this book made me uncomfortable and I wasn't a fan at all.

Popsugar 2019 Reading Challenge Prompt: A book with "love" in the title


TW: graphic sexual acts, sexuality in relation with children, animal cruelty



Y'all, I had this weird creeping feeling the entire time I was reading You Had Me to Love, and my intuition was certainly right. There was some weird stuff going on in this book, and it made me feel incredibly uncomfortable. But not in the way I felt uncomfortable with All the Ugly and Wonderful Things (which made me feel uncomfortable, but was a beautifully written, terribly sad and amazing book). This one just made me feel icky and I wasn't totally sure the direction the book was trying to take.


The novel starts with Mikael, a 9 year-old who's father disappears into the water one day when they're both out on the beach. After weeks of searching, his father is nowhere to be found. Mikael holds an incredible guilt, which forces him both further away from his mother while forcing him closer to her, as well. 


Within part one of the novel, I was fairly intrigued, but I was also immediately thrown off my the timeline in the story. I couldn't tell how much time had passed, and it truly only become worse. Mikael was 9, then he had a mustache. I couldn't quite keep up with the plot's timeline. It was ultimately just really confusing to me.






The writing was truly poetic throughout, which is an ode to both the author and the translator. But the novel was also incredibly dark, but not like a traditional thriller - instead it was a sickening type of dark that crawled up under your skin and made you itch in an unscratchable way. I couldn't quite move past that dark and icky feeling.

I knew the direction the book was taking the entire time, but there was no twist or big reveal. And overall, I felt the intention of the story was very lost. I didn't really get where it was trying to go. I understood the issues of mentality unraveling, but overall I wasn't sure what else the story was trying to deliver to the reader, and that was incredibly frustrating to me.

I obviously wasn't a fan of this one.

People from all over the world flock to Florida every year to visit the theme parks. Universal is truly the coolest place I've ever been, and Disneyworld is a place most families and thrill-seekers to visit at least once, but it does overshadow all of the other great things that Florida has to offer. If you’ve been to too many theme parks to count, or it they don't appeal to you at all, you might not think about Florida when you’re planning your next trip, but maybe you should reconsider because there are plenty of other great places to visit within the state. These are some of the places I want to go in Florida at some point in my life (even though I definitely want to head back to Universal, as well - especially once the Wizarding World of Harry Potter gets their new Hagrid-based ride).




Everglades National Park

If the idea of spending your days walking around a loud, busy theme park sounds awful, Everglades National Park is probably more your speed. If you’re a wildlife lover, you should definitely visit this amazing national park at some point in your life. Most people go there to try to catch a glimpse of the famous alligators, but there is plenty of other great wildlife to be found there. The best way to explore the Everglades National Park is by airboat, and you can find plenty of companies that offer tours.



Weeki Wachee Springs

Less than two hours from Orlando, Weeki Wachee Springs can even be a day trip if you're heading to the theme parks, as well. It’s a great family destination that doesn’t cost that much so it’s ideal if you’re trying to travel on a budget. There are some great family resorts near the state park where you’ll find water parks, boat trips, and wildlife trails. This has been on my bucket list for years and is so cool, because you can swim with the manatees or see real-life mermaid shows!



Miami Beach

Miami Beach is one of the most iconic beach destinations in the world, best known for its great party atmosphere, amazing food, and beautiful beaches. If you want the party experience, head over to South Beach, but if you’re looking for something a bit more relaxing, there are plenty of quieter beaches around. There are some great Miami boat rental companies that will hire you a boat for the day so you can explore the waters. It’s the best way to see the beautiful coastline along Miami and see the different beaches in the area. Not to mention the Florida Keys aren't far past.



Kennedy Space Center

If you’re interested in space, Kennedy space center is an absolute must while visiting Florida. The world famous NASA launch site in Cape Canaveral has a great visitors center where you can see old decommissioned shuttles, simulations of a shuttle launch, interactive exhibitions about traveling to Mars and if you’re lucky, you might even get to meet a real-life astronaut.



Daytona International Speedway

Any fans of racing should stop by the Daytona International Speedway while they’re in Florida. I grew up in a NASCAR superfan family and we went out to the races all the time. Daytona International Speedway is home to the world famous Daytona 500, and has different races all year round so you can usually catch one while you’re there. They also have some great tours of the track where you can learn about the history of the sport.




If you thought that Florida was just about the theme parks, think again. These are just some of the amazing things that you’ll find there. You'd think I'd have been to Florida more than three times, living in Georgia, but I've definitely got to make time to visit some of the destinations above.

Popsugar 2019 Reading Challenge Prompt: A book you think should be turned into a movie

You've seen all the hoopla about Daisy Jones & the Six. We all have. Who hasn't? I've only ever read one other Taylor Jenkins Reid book (The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo) and I mother-freaking loved it. But I wasn't expecting to love Daisy as much as everybody else seemed to be raving out the novel. But I did. It's only the second book all year I've given five stars, and they were well-deserved.


Daisy Jones & the Six is a novel disguised as a fictional rock band's oral history and tell-all. The book is written in interview-style depicting the rise and fall of Daisy Jones and the Six. Daisy Jones began as a separate entity than the Six, then their musical worlds collided, then fell apart.


I have never read anything like this. I felt like I was watching a VH1 special on my favorite band. I grew up on 70s music - my dad and I would always listen to this Pure 70s album on the way to school, and this made me so nostalgic for that time. I was so intrigued by the characters - throughout the book, I felt so hopeful, and heartbroken, and angsty.






I was also heavily reminded of one of my favorite sitcoms, but I feel like if you've watched it all the way through and read this book, somehow I would spoil this novel for you, so I can't quite share what sitcom I'm referring to, but if you've seen it and read Daisy, send me a message on Instagram so we can chat about it.

Jenkins Reid's writing is so full of passion and emotion, and I need to read everything she has ever written. This book was so poetic, I wanted to highlight quotes on every single page, but I also didn't want to ruin the story. I also love she includes the lyrics to the songs mentioned in the book - so not only did TJR write this emotional and compelling book, but she wrote some amazingly kick-ass songs, and I cannot wait for Reese Witherspoon's adaptation of the novel to be turned into a tv show with all original music. Seriously. Can. Not. Wait.

I've wanted to get my hands on the Wizarding World of Harry Potter Lootcrate for what feels like forever. On Black Friday, all Lootcrates were half-off, so I was able to get a three-month subscription for just $60. A one-month subscription costs almost $50, so this was a heck of a deal I couldn't pass by. Wizarding World crates are released every other month, so ordering at the end of December, I'm set for a January, March, and May box. I received my first box very early in February, so I expect to get my next box early April.

All of the items in this month's box were created exclusively for the Wizarding World Loot Crate. I don't know if that's the case for all the boxes, since this is my first, but if so - that is amazing. I cannot wait to see what's in my next crate.


Have you tried any Loot Crates?

Between December and the start of March, I was able to mark just a few things off my list. I was able to check off a couple other things (even though the exact dates fell outside of my 1001, which officially ended on February 27).









To wrap up, I think my first round of 101 in 1001 was fairly successful. I completed about 40% of the goals on the list. Realistically goals evolve and priorities shift. I'm excited for what I accomplished and I'm pumped to start another round.
